FKT is short for “Fastest Known Time”—essentially, a speed record on any given route that has been publicly noted. ‘FKT’ as a concept has been popular for the past two decades. It’s quite simple to understand how the record is made. The clock starts at the beginning of the route, and does not stop until the end. Virtually anything can be an FKT, except for the fact that it’s only understood or noted by the masses when the route has qualities of interest to others, and is distinct enough to be repeated.

On Tuesday, 16th June 2020, Kieren DSouza ran from the Mall road, Manali town (HP) to the summit of Mt. Friendship (5,289mtrs/17,348ft) and back. He covered a total distance of 53.38 kms, clocking a time of 11 hours, 45 minutes and 50 seconds. This is the ‘fastest known time’ anyone has taken to summit the peak, starting from the main Manali town (on foot) and returning to the same start point to finish the record’s requirements. It is probably also the first time an Indian has climbed a Himalayan peak in this style.
Situated at the convergence of the Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal mountain ranges, Friendship peak is located near the Beas Kund glacier. Considered as one of the most accessible peaks in India, Mt. Friendship is quite popular among trekkers and mountaineers of all skill levels. The chief hazards on the mountain are a glacial ice fall, numerous crevasses on the climbing route and steep snow & ice slopes near the summit. To achieve the record, Kieren ran a distance of 54kms (approx) to the summit, from the Mall road (Manali Town, HP) and back. Normally climbing parties take as much as 5 to 7 days, just to complete the climb.
The reason and capability behind such feats cannot simply be explained through mere numbers, but is rooted in a person’s imagination. To foster such a mind one needs years of consistency. So here are four lesser known FKTs of Kieren Dsouza which helped him build upto his ‘Mt. Friendship run’.

1- Hampta Pass, Himachal Pradesh (4 hours 30 minutes)
Route: Chattru – Allain Duhangan Power Plant
[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfjuVNHGnvE” align=”center”][vc_column_text]
Situated at an altitude of 4270 metres, Hampta pass connects Lahaul’s Chandra Valley to Kullu valley of Himachal Pradesh, India. The maximum altitude gained during Hampta pass trek is 4270 m and total trek distance is 35 kms. People usually take 4 days to cross the pass, Kieren did it in 4hr 30mins; during which he also shot this video.
2- Khanpari Tibba, Himachal Pradesh (3 hours 45 minutes)
Route: Hadimba Temple – Khanpari Summit – Hadimba Temple
[/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgjgRD5yy3M” align=”center”][vc_column_text]
The video is not a document of the FKT, but a normal Sunday afternoon in the life of Kieren Dsouza.
Situated at an altitude of 4025 metres in the Pir Panjal Range, Khanpari Tibba is a moderate two day trek. The area is frequented by shepherds, who pass frequently to get to higher grasslands. The mountain also lies behind Kieren’s house in Nasogi and hence is his regular training ground. He completed a round-trip from Hadimba to the summit and back in 3 hours 45 minutes.
3- Bhrigu Lake (6 hours 30 minutes)
Route: 4Play Hoffice – Bhrigu Lake – 4Play Hoffice
[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”6685″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]
Situated at an altitude of 4300 metres to the East of Rohtang Pass in Kullu district, Bhrigu lake is a high altitude alpine lake, which is considered to be a three days hike away from Manali. Kieren completed a round trip from his house in Nasogi in 6hrs 30min.
4- Patalsu Peak (8 hours and 30 minutes)
Route: 4Play Hoffice – Patalsu Summit – 4Play Hoffice
[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”6686″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]
Situated at an altitude of 4250 metres, towering above the Solang Valley, Patalsu is considered as another modest summit around Manali. Normally people make a 2-3 day trip to climb up and down the mountain. Kieren completed the trip to and fro in 8hrs 30mins.
